Fraunhofer ITWM Introduces Mobile Pre-Stack Computing – ‘PreStack Pro on the Go’ from Sharp Reflections & NextComputing – Hall E, Booth 416

October 20, 2009 – NextComputing and Sharp Reflections GmbH will be exhibiting a mobile solution for large-scale pre-stack seismic data analysis on the Fraunhofer ITWM stand at SEG Houston 2009. This marks an important step in the commercialization of Fraunhofer’s Pre-Stack Pro software.

Fraunhofer ITWM (Kaiserslautern, Germany) and Envision AS (Stavanger, Norway) recently announced the creation of Sharp Reflections GmbH to commercialize their scaleable pre-stack computing platform. PreStack Pro gives seismic interpreters tools to visualize and process massive pre-stack datasets using today’s latest multi-cpu, multi-core computer systems. Sharp Reflections has teamed with NextComputing of Nashua NH to deliver the first portable high-performance system capable of providing Pre-Stack Pro services at customer locations, anywhere time-critical drilling decisions are being made.

Pre-Stack Pro users can quickly scan massive pre-stack datasets, identify anomalies directly on gathers, and create custom stacks for prospect mapping. According to Bill Shea, Sharp Reflections co-founder and CEO, "Pre-Stack Pro compresses complex analyses that normally take weeks into mere days. By offering a turn-key service solution, we can help new customers to extract added value from their seismic data immediately."

About Pre-Stack Pro

Pre-Stack Pro is the product of close R&D collaboration between Fraunhofer ITWM, EnVision AS, and StatoilHydro. This new, high-performance software streamlines pre-stack seismic data analysis by integrating visualization, gather processing, and quantitative amplitude analysis on one platform. It scales from multi-CPU, multi-core workstations to enterprise clusters, and brings exciting interactive compute capabilities to the interpretation desktop, including:

  • Fast, parallel access to TB-scale 3D pre-stack data sets
  • Real-time gather muting, stacking, and data conditioning
  • CPU-driven volume rendering, with no practical image size limit
  • Faster time-to-insight

About NextComputing

NextComputing provides powerful, briefcase sized systems that fit in an overhead compartment, yet deliver the results of dual, quad core server class CPUs, 32 GB of ECC memory, RAID storage sufficient for a full 3D pre stack data set, workstation graphics with on-board high resolution display, and data center I/O capabilities.  NextComputing’s NextDimension portable units provide the ideal hardware platform for delivering Pre-Stack Pro benefits to the field. Bob Labadini, President and CTO of NextComputing, added, "We are pleased to be chosen by Sharp Reflections to provide the computing platform to bring these new seismic interpretation capabilities directly to the site where the decision making is taking place.  NextComputing is committed to providing data center class processing wherever it’s needed."
