Real-time 3D Broadcast Graphics for Sports and Live Events
Problem
Sophisticated graphics are used throughout live television programming, satisfying audience demand for constant, real-time information. Networks continually rely on graphics to engage viewers and to get advertisers' messages seen in more places. Generating real-time 3D graphics requires considerable computing power, most often handled by a robust graphics server.
While this may suit a studio environment, live sports and event productions often require greater hardware flexibility than a stationary rackmount computer. However, laptops lack the high-end graphics capabilities or video I/O support graphics generation and are not rugged enough for constant live production.
At the same time, mobile van companies are moving away from providing a "one size fits all" graphics system in their trucks, instead leaving the choice of graphics hardware up to the network or a service provider.
Solution
NextComputing's robust, portable computers offer the same performance, high-end 3D graphics capability, and support for video I/O as more traditional rackmount servers. Networks gain the flexibility to use systems among multiple locations, simplified setup and breakdown, and significantly reduced shipping costs. For sports production where games are happening in several locations in a short time frame, this is especially relevant.
Service providers can now generate new revenue streams by adding higher-quality graphics to their service offerings, with the flexibility of reliable, broadcast-tested mobile systems. NextComputing systems can even travel with a team aboard an aircraft, giving them the ability to set their own standards for graphics look and quality, whether playing at home or away. Independent producers can add a compact, portable character generator to their arsenal, giving their productions the same high-quality graphics look as a major network.

Live HD Video Encoding & Streaming
Problem
Online video has exploded, and audiences’ need for HD content online is expected to increase in coming years as technology opens the doors with more efficient video formats, like H.264, and faster bandwidth to the consumer. Many corporations are already using video as a way to communicate important company messages internally. And with more and more live events being broadcast on the internet, specialized hardware must be used in to encode and stream the event to an online audience.
Encoding HD video in real-time is a compute-intensive process, requiring very fast, multi-threaded processing, high-speed disk storage, and the ability to support specialized video I/O devices, like PCI cards. For live events, this HD content must also be pushed out to the network, putting further strain on a system’s resources. Most standard rackmount servers cannot handle these tasks, let alone a typical laptop computer.
Solution
NextComputing's open-standards, portable computers provide all the performance needed for live HD encoding and streaming in a compact design that’s ideal for live event production. Equally capable rackmount solutions are available for situations where a portable system may not be needed, such as a more typical server room environment. Now TV networks, event producers, and companies of all sizes can produce engaging, live content online in stunning HD without investing in expensive, proprietary encoding systems.
